Hooray for Houston in August!

Texas Advocates looking forward to 2013 statewide conference.

Planning is underway for the 2013 Texas Advocates Conference August 9-11 In Houston. Organizers are putting the finishing touches on a schedule full of fun, friendship, and learning.

The Activities

A detailed schedule is coming soon. Here are a few highlights:

  • Friday, August 9 ­– Friday Night at the Movies with Dessert! Enjoy dinner on your own in the Galleria, then join the group at the hotel for a movie and dessert.
  • Saturday, August 10 – Speakers will include the Texas Advocates president and Board members. The keynote speaker will be Beth Holt. Beth is a long-time Texas Advocate member and past president. She has served on the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities and as the Sabine Valley Community Center customer services representative and coordinator for the Peer-to-Peer Project.
  • There will be workshops on a variety of topics (many presented by self-advocates) such as self-advocacy, legislative advocacy, independent living, self-determination, leadership, voting, transportation, employment, Medicaid, and more. The day of learning will be topped off with a banquet and dance.

The Location

Conference headquarters is The Westin Oaks Houston at the Galleria at 5011 Westheimer. The special conference room rate is $99 (plus tax) per night. Call 1-713-960-8100 no later than July 18 to get the special conference room rate. 

Registration

All registration will be online this year. You will fill out registration and stipend forms and pay online. Advisors will be able to register multiple people online. The deadline for stipend registration ($80 per person) is July 18 The deadline for regular registration ($90 per person) is July 25. Registration fees cover breakfast, lunch, and the banquet/dance on Saturday, and breakfast Sunday. There will be a small fee forFriday Night at the Movies and Dessert! (to be determined).

Note these key dates:

June 10: Deadline for sending in workshop proposals.

July 18: Last day of stipend registration at the $80 rate.

July 18: Deadline for special hotel rate.

July 25: Last day for regular registration ($90 rate).
