Local Chapter Showcase Award
Staff of the Year:
Betty Jo Munn
If you ask the members of The Arc in Midland what they think of when they hear the name Betty Jo Munn, they will reply: Commitment, Dedication, Inspiration, and, often, Superwoman.
How can we tell you what she has done? It may be easier to list those few things that she has not done for people with disabilities in her 34 years in our field. She believes in families and consumers and has sought to respond to their needs. She operated a school for children with disabilities before the adoption of the federal IDEA legislation. She began a daycare center so children with disabilities could have a safe and nurturing environment in which to stay until parents could get off work.
Betty Jo has been an advocate for more than three decades. She believes in people with disabilities; she supports them as they reach for their dreams; she assists them in advocating for their own interests.
Betty Jo has supported the organizational development of her chapter for well over 30 years and has participated in its evolution and growth. She has engaged in fund raising, marketing, leadership development and just about every other activity that makes a volunteer organization sound and effective.
The members at the chapter in Midland say: “Betty Jo has been an unassuming supporting part of our chapter for 34 years, and yet has never been its titled leader. What she has been, instead, is a model of excellent service and unwavering devotion. She deserves the recognition of this award.”
We agree. Congratulations to Betty Jo Munn, The Arc of Texas Staff Person of the Year.
